Edit:  Added his 2014 re-draw because I should have included it in the first place.
--
I decided that, instead of a full-year progress meme, I would compare two drawings I thought to be dramatically different to each other, even though they are meant to be the same thing.

2013 -- My original creation of Salvato had a more natural look to him in my head, but I wasn't able to figure out how on earth to digitally draw the design I kept picturing for him; consequently, my initial drawings of him were annoyingly complex and fake looking.

2014 -- My issues with his coloring looking very plastic and unrealistic really only escalated here, though it was in an attempt to simplify his design (whilst modifying it slightly) in hopes that I'd be more motivated to redraw him.  As far as the style goes, I really don't have any major issues with it; the problem arises in replication.  This was the only version of him in which I referenced the pose from a photograph of a real Friesian.  I try to avoid referencing if I can help it because I simply hate doing it (that or I'm just too lazy to...oops), so there was no way I was going to be able to keep this style up consistently without requiring a reference of some sort for every drawing.  It wasn't happening.

2015 -- Alas, I'm finally starting to grow into a style that I will (hopefully) keep for a while.  Honestly I'd spent a year convincing myself I wasn't improving at all and should just give up...it wasn't until I went back to compare my new drawing of Savvy to my old drawings of him that I realized I couldn't be more wrong.   I am extremely happy with his current design, as it's the closest I've ever gotten to the ideal appearance of him I had in the beginning.  Not only does he finally look like he's come to life visually, but in expression, as well.  I found away to give him an expression that felt genuine rather than generic, and do it in my own way without any referencing or reliance on source material.

The morale of the story is don't get discouraged by where you are at in your work.  There's always room for improvement and, whether you're aware of it or not, if you keep at it, you will improve.  That's a promise.

Also, if you'd like a .psd version of these meme template I made for myself, I would be happy to share it with you; note me if you'd like it.
